Without knowing why, she leaned against him and pressed her damp face to his bare chest. He stiffened for a moment, and she feared he would push her away again. Then the strange hiccough of a sob came out of her mouth once more, and his arms encircled her, pulling D.J. closer.
"Don't worry. Whatever you dreamed is gone now. It can't hurt you here." His whisper stirred her hair; then his hand smoothed down the back of her head, lingering at her neck. Long fingers stroked bunched muscles, kneading away the tension. A contented sigh fluttered from her mouth. "What did you dream, D.J.? Tell me."
She could never tell him about the dream from which he'd woken her. How mortifying to imagine having children with a man who wanted nothing to do with her! She'd keep such a secret to herself. Forever. But the rest . . .
"A cave," she blurted, the tension he'd so recently smoothed away returning full force. McCall began to rub her neck again as he made soothing sounds of encouragement. "It's dark and I'm all alone. I can't get out. There's no way out. I'll die alone."
He nodded, the movement of his head rubbing a beard-roughened cheek against D.J.'s forehead. Though the scrape hurt a bit, she didn't pull away. he felt too good to give up just yet. "Do you dream the same dream a lot?" he asked.
"Yes. Ever since I was a child."
